Casey Key Florida: A History of Unspoiled Beauty

Casey Key Florida

While Casey Key real estate is known around the world for its luxurious homes, natural beauty and solitude, many don’t realize that the small island has gone through many name changes throughout its interesting history. Furthermore, while Casey Key is located within the popular Sarasota County, it offers a peaceful retreat from the many activities the area has to offer.

Up until 1856, Casey Key was known as Chaise’s Key. During this time, the island was occupied by Seminole Indians. After Captain Charles Casey of the US Army arrived on the island, however, he assisted with moving the remaining Indians while also helping with the mapping of the area. While on the island, Captain Casey also assisted with completing the original coast survey. Since Captain Casey’s name was the first to appear on the map, the area that is now known as the Venice inlet came to be known as Casey’s Pass.

In 1856, the map of Florida underwent some significant revisions. It was at this time that Chaise’s Key was renamed to Casey Key. While a real estate developer made an effort to change the name to Treasure Island during the 1920s, the new name didn’t stick and its residents reverted back to calling the island Casey Key.

While no one would disagree that Casey Key is a treasure, choosing to stick with the name Casey Key was a wise choice. Unlike some of the other destinations in the Sarasota area, Casey Key is far from being touristy. The unspoiled key features white sand beaches, beautiful sunsets and a level of privacy that can’t be found in much of Sarasota. Thanks to zoning restrictions, which prevent commercial activity and hi-rise hotels from being constructed on the island, residents can rest assured the beautiful views will remain for years to come. Whether wildlife viewing, fishing, boating or simply soaking up some rays, Casey Key is a treasure that its residents prefer to keep to themselves.
